Trauma occurs when we have experienced something
so awful or frightening that it sets our bodies' survival mechanisms into action, but they remain unresolved. When trauma
is not carefully and gently worked through, our bodies may remain stuck in hyper alert or frozen survival mode impeding our
ability to heal.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been discussed
in relation to war survivors but it also affects people who have experienced such things as car accidents, rape, surgical
procedures, attack, chronic abuse, among other unfortunate experiences.
There
is a lot of suffering in trauma and it is an unfortunate part of life for many people. Fortunately, however, with the techniques
of Somatic Experiencing (SE®), healing is possible.
